ok what would you do in this situation
............................................................
If someone you knew badly needed surgery but the procedure was risky painful and with less than a 50-50 chance of success..they inform you that they have decided not to go ahead but try an alternative, which has potenially great results but is still largely untried would you encourage them to try the more radical option,or convince them to try the 1st one.

well depends on what it was. I imagine that without the surgery the relevant party is going to die? and if they are that set on not having the surgery, surely an alternative is better than nothing at all?

no they are not going to die and the alternative is definately better than nothing however its expensive something of an unknown Christ! I wish I could be more specific.

well then I guess it comes down to a question of quality of life doesn't it. If this person isn't going to die without the surgery, what is their quality of life going to be like? and if they have the alternative treatment, will it improve their quality of life signifficantly? if so, then they should do what they think is best ... also, is this person an adult? because if so only they can make that decision. if it is a child it is a different matter altogether, but if it is an adult and you were to talk them into one option or another, and it were to go wrong, there's a chance they could resent you for it in the future. hth

the surgery could either improve their quality of life, or decrease it, if the procedure fails to work we have no firm guarentee. Its a preventitive measure not a cure you know Doctors they waffle to protect themselves.

Yes they are an adult and fully able to decide however that doesn't make the decision any easier...if they go with option 2 its very much a case of finding someone reptuable who is willing to do the operation, and not some eejit who see's this person as nothing more than a lab rat to experiment on.

I don't knopw what to tell you Goblin. I just want to wish you and your friend luck. I'm sorry i can't be of more help. On one hand, it seems like you would avoid the first operation at all costs. But on the other hand, the second one might not work. So what is one to do?
Take care.

the 1st option is incredibly risky, the 2nd is possibly a miracle, but the side effects are relatively unknown. With the 1st operation we have been made aware of every likely scenario but no one can tell us the outcome if we decide on option 2 and that's a big worry because its not as if we can go back and say can you reverse this please..
